Better Buying is Hiring: Vice President of Business Development

Better Buying Institute (BBI) was launched in 2019 to promote the improvement of buyer purchasing practices, supply chain management, worker conditions, and the natural environment. A young organization working to transform the way global supply chains work, BBI’s primary activities include: (i) independent research, (ii) the operation and management of a ratings and evaluation platform on which suppliers provide information about their buyer customers relating to various aspects of purchasing practices and (iii) projects and training on supply chain industry practices to support innovation and promote change. Our work started with the apparel, footwear, and household textiles industries where we are already beginning to see positive changes. We have been organically expanding into the broader consumer goods sector and plan to make more intentional progress with new industries in that sector soon.

Better Buying Institute reimagines supply chain sustainability, leveraging data to strengthen supplier-buyer relationships and improve purchasing practices that drive profitability while protecting workers and the environment. We focus on the day-to-day business activities (purchasing practices) used by retailers and brands to bring products to market. While these purchasing practices have been known to put pressure on supply chains, their negative impacts on suppliers, workplace conditions, worker wages, and environmental performance have increased and become highly visible during the Coronavirus pandemic crisis with brand and retailer purchasing practices often determining the viability of supplier businesses and whether or not workers in their factories go hungry.

Better Buying Institute is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization incorporated in Delaware in the United States and is the outgrowth of a research project started in 2015 and headed by Dr. Marsha Dickson, a distinguished academic scholar.

About the Opportunity

Better Buying Institute is seeking a Vice President of Business Development who will use their passion for supply chain sustainability to accelerate Better Buying’s growth and impact on global supply chains. As a senior leader in our young and nimble organization, the Vice President of Business Development will be responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of Better Buying’s global business development activities. This new role will seek out opportunities to expand the use of Better Buying’s tools and expertise with brands, retailers, and partner organizations across multiple global consumer goods industries and therefore play a pivotal role in helping transform the way global supply chains operate in support of workers and the environment. This position will engage extensively with brands and retailers and organizations at the various meetings and events where they are present, achieve key strategic goals and financial targets, and work closely with the President to identify new opportunities that will build Better Buying Institute’s impact and global presence.

Major Roles & Responsibilities

Global Business Development. Based on a strong understanding of Better Buying’s research services and value proposition, take leadership for new business development to increase brand and retailer subscriptions in apparel, footwear, household textiles, and general retail where we already work, expand subscriptions into new industries and across the broader consumer goods sector, and develop new revenue streams and markets consistent with organizational strategy. Secure renewals of existing subscribers and actively prospect and recruit new subscribers to meet annual funding targets and targets by sector. With the support of the Senior Manager of Communications, manage the inventory and production of collateral for business development purposes.

Subscriber Operations. Responsible for and the primary contact for client relations with subscribers. With support of the Senior Manager of Operations, develop and implement standard operating procedures for subscriber onboarding and all operations related to subscriber life cycle, including administering legal agreements, invoicing, securing all necessary supply chain information, releasing company reports, ensuring feedback is shared with suppliers, and working on purchasing practices improvements. Ensure subscriber contracts are renewed in a timely manner, legal agreements are executed, and payment obligations are met. Collaborate with the Research & Reporting team to support successful data collection for subscribers. Contribute a subscriber perspective to tool development, company reports, industry trend reports, and other services and products.

Strategy and Organizational Leadership. Work as a thought partner to the President to identify new market opportunities that are consistent with our charitable mission and increase the impact of our work. Lead development of new revenue-producing programs and contribute direction to our education and training program. Collaborate with the President to actively prospect companies to join Better Buying’s Leadership Circle sponsorship program and engage external stakeholders, building and supporting key partnerships and relationships globally, both within the apparel, footwear, and household textile industries and in other industries identified for expansion. In collaboration with the President and with support of the Senior Manager of Communications, coordinate, participate, and speak in tradeshows, webinars, industry and other stakeholder events and conferences that support achievement of Better Buying’s strategic goals and business targets. Take on other organizational leadership work as assigned by the President.

Qualifications should include:

The ideal candidate for Vice President of Business Development is passionate about Better Buying’s mission. In addition:

•Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business Administration, or a related field of study.
• A proven history of success spanning at least 7 years in business development and/or securing financial commitments as evidenced by meeting or exceeding financial and other goals, both for self and for the team.
• An understanding of and appreciation for scientific research needed to accurately convey Better Buying’s research value proposition with external stakeholders.
• An understanding of the relationship between business behavior and business, social, and environmental sustainability opportunities and challenges and a desire to deepen knowledge in this area.
• Exceptional communications, business planning, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
• Flexible and able to adapt to a rapidly changing, lean start-up environment.
• Self-motivated, goal-driven professional with ability to work remotely with minimal supervision and support own administrative needs in a small, entrepreneurial team environment.
• High ethical standards and personal integrity.
• Based in North America or Europe.
• Willingness to travel globally as needed when COVID-related restrictions ease.

In addition, the following skills and experiences are preferred:
• Experience in global supply chains or sustainability, preferably with brands, retailers, global manufacturers, or a non-profit working with those businesses.
• An extensive network of brand and retailer decision-makers across multiple consumer goods industries.
• Professional post-graduate degree (MS, MBA, or other related).

This is a full-time position. You will work remotely from your home and report to Better Buying’s President. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.
